Locopentimento
The installation Locopentimento, in the form of a broken train, draws its title from two words: “Loco,” referring to both railway and place, and “Pentimento,” a term in painting that denotes traces of overpainting. The work addresses the lives erased by the linear infrastructure of the railway—the fleeting landscapes and experiences that vanish in transit, and the voices pushed outside institutional boundaries.
The artist digitally layered graffiti images collected across urban sites, then incised the final composite into the surface, bringing back erased traces and overpainted voices. This process becomes an act of imagining invisible strata and accumulated utterances.
Fragments of image tiles are also embedded in the surface. These are sourced from the artist’s immediate surroundings, scraped as though peeling away the skin of place, leaving their original contexts obscured. The images were transferred onto wooden panels, cut into small pieces, and irregularly inlaid into the pulp surface before it dried. Through this process, any coherent form disappears, leaving only indecipherable fragments. Yet, these dispersed shards coalesce again, evoking the contours of a map or suggesting unseen pathways.
부서진 기차 형상의 설치작업 〈Locopentimento〉의 ‘Loco’는 철도와 장소를, ‘Pentimento’는 회화에서 덧칠된 흔적을 뜻한다. 작품은 철도라는 선형 인프라가 우리에 게 선사한 속도와 편리함의 이면에서 지워진 삶들, 스쳐 지나며 잊힌 풍경과 경험들, 그리고 제도 밖으로 밀려난 목소리들을 다룬다.
작가는 도시 곳곳에서 수집한 그래피티 이미지를 디지털로 중첩한 뒤, 최종 형상을 다 시 음각으로 파내는 과정을 통해 지워진 흔적과 덧칠된 목소리를 되살려낸다. 이는 보 이지 않게 된 층위와 켜켜이 쌓인 발화를 상상하게 하는 행위이기도 하다.
또한 작품의 표면에는 파편화된 이미지 타일이 새겨져 있다. 이는 작가가 자신을 둘 러싼 공간의 표면을 긁어내듯 수집한 이미지들로, 원본의 맥락은 이미 소거된 상태다. 이미지는 나무판에 전사된 뒤 잘게 절단되어, 종이죽이 굳기 전에 불규칙적으로 삽입 된다. 그 과정에서 온전한 형상은 사라지고 해독할 수 없는 조각들만 남는다. 그러나 흩어진 파편들은 다시 모여 하나의 지도를 떠올리게 하거나, 보이지 않는 경로를 암 시하는 형상을 드러낸다.
